Some of these movements remain inward-turned and risk becoming closed-in fundamentalist groups.” Others, he said, respond to the call of the Gospels to be their brother’s and sister’s keeper and are moving to help the poorâ€"and thus “helping create the social revolution needed for modernization.” “We would like to highlight progress made and challenges faced by movements seeking to build meaningâ€"structures founded on the Christian Go! spels and at the same time responsive to the need to reach out! to the poor and build community among all Filipinos,” Nebres said. He said this is a search for Christian meaningâ€"structures that will bridge the cultural divide between the modernized Christianity of many middle-class Filipinos and the traditional Christianity of the masses. “In building that bridge, the Church can then play a critical role in both moving the Philippines forward toward modernization and at the same time keep our sense of identity, community and meaning whole,” he said. The 26th NAST Annual Scientific Meeting with the theme “On Being and Becoming: Where We Are and Where We want to Be,” discussed pressing issues in the country, such as on church and society, humanities, education, economy, agriculture, natural resources, and health research and practice. The Annual Scientific Meeting is a leading forum for the presentation of new scientific and technological findings, research and information by individual scientists,! led by the members of the Academy. Resolutions or policy recommendations will be referred to concerned government agencies for consideration and appropriate action.
