Gene Debell: In GA, sadly there has been much improvement. The cost burden to certify any new technology vs limited market that it appeals to is just not profitable. There has been some major gains in the Expermiental Market such as Rotax Engines, which may make for a good topic.
Kaylee Schmittou: I had to write a similar essay recently. As opposed to what captsead0nkey said, there have been leaps and bounds in fuel efficiency in the past few years. Winglets are good but the Boeing Raked Wingtip feature is even better! the feature unlike winglets actually carries itself meaning it doesn't cost precious weight that Winglets do.Check out GE aircraft engines. A while ago they developed the GE-90, the most fuel efficient engine in the world. strangely enough, as fuel efficiency increases in jet engines, so does power. The GE-90 for a time (may still be) was the most powerful jet engine in the world as well! While staying on the subject of engines, if you want to look ! at general aviation, many new Diesel engines have been released and they sip fuel. The engines on the DA42 (Diamond TwinStar) sip only 12 gallons per hour together in cruise (6 per engine). Compare that to a Cessna C172 which slurps down 10 gallons per hour with its single engine. The use of composite materials in aircraft has made huge strides since its early days when it was first used in mass on the Beechcraft Starship (Which was one of the most innovative aircraft in the world). Today, the Boeing 787 is nearly completely composite which reduces its weight significantly while simplifying the construction process and not sacrificing any structural strength. Going back to the Diamond aircraft for a minute, they are designed after gliders. Therefore, their beautiful wings are very clean (no rivets or seams) and the planes themselves are quite fast and very fun to fly. They are make entirely out of composite materials (Carbon Fiber and Fiberglass). This info should get you a g! ood start on your essay. If you have any additional questions,! amend this one and I will try to answer to the best of my ability....Show more
