Vickie Sterbenz: Without an ongoing program, an annual test, like you said, doesn't change habits. There is a liability issue too, especially without a medical certification and ongoing fitness program too. If some fatboy drops during a fitness test who hasn't been medically certified as capable, or there has not been an opportunity to maintain a fitness level as part of the course of duty, the department will be open to lawsuit.As far as having a whole fitness program, including annual tests, there is no real argument against it....Show more
Alphonso Brake: I think alot of officers would fail the test...then what? As a city standpoint, if half of the officers fail, who would patrol? They can only hire so many. Training takes alot of time, and alot of money. In a perfect world, cops would all be 6'3". 210 lbs of pure muscle. Thats not reality. We do alot of sitting in the cruiser, eating fast food, working all sorts of crazy hours. I work 12 hour night shifts. I'd! rather sleep on my days off then exercise. I'm not overweight due to good metabolism. I'm sure it will all catch up to me when I'm in my 40's. ...Show more
