We get Genetics questons all the time and they really belong under Biology as Genealogy and Genetics are not the same thing. In genealogy we trace ancestry using documents/records.

But, like many other disciplines, science is very involved, particulary genetic genealogy.An understanding of antrhopology really helps in finding ancestors centuries ago, or understanding where you ance! stors might have come from (look up "european" tribes as an example), but, again, it is not directly related.Genealogy is too abstract, too subjective. Some of the genealogy books I have read, written by world's foremost genealogists, when digging into trees hundreds of years ago examined all available records, including family Bibles, any type historica record, wills, etc., and would conclude that so and so was PROBABLY the son of such and such based upon dates of birth and names. It was customary for Germans in the 1400s and 1500s to name their sons & daughters after a godmother or godfather. These godparents were frequently aunts, uncles, or even grandparents.In my trees, it is common for a person in one generation to have a certain name, the succeeding generation a different name, then back to the first name. Or, especially with the Germans, each generation having the same name, just a variant: Johann, Johannes, Hans, etc.In other words, genealogy does fit neatly in! to "Humanities"; you can't get any more "humanity" than histories of fa! milies....Show more
Lana Uliano: Maybe you are thinking it has something to do with genes- it doesn't.Genealogy is just family history, finding out about your ancestors mainly by looking for written records.
