Does the law of conservation of energy apply to humans?

Antonia Boomershine: Yes it does, but not in the way phoney ghosts shows explain it. Humans get energy from consuming other life forms, both plant and vegetable. When we die, in the natural order of the Universe, other life forms, both plant and vegetable consume our bodies for energy. Even in cremation our energy is consumed to create flame and gas.People who believe in ghosts, and the shows and books that exploit their gullibility, often distort real science. We know why shows like Ghost Adventures do it, profit. Why the consumers of paranormal media do, is less clear. I prefer knowing to believing. If someone proves me wrong on something, it is a learning experience. I do not understand why someone would resist knowledge and accept the pseudo science of shows like Ghost Adventures. The truth is out there....Show more

Luana Carothers: Yes the laws of conservation apply to humans,My opinion on whether or not ghosts exist are different than what your other guests thi! nk. I believe the human brain hosts a great magnetic wave around it while we are alive which is exteremely high in frequency both in gathering information and in transmitting information but on different wavelengths, what we gather is on one set of wavelengths and what we transmit is on another set of wavelengths (this is just my opinion) these wavelengths kinda overlap but don't exactly jive and so we don't get back exactly what we put out (if that makes sense) in this way we interact with our surroundings and with each other as best we can. I think that when we die, if we are satisfied, our electrical field goes on to interact with the electric field of the universe, (our electric field being our spirit and thus the field of the universe being the spirit of the universe or heaven) or if we are not satisfied or we have unsettled spirits?..we stay behind until we find peace...this is a ghost.....a ghost can interact with our electric fields if we are alive if we are sensiti! ve enough or if this ghost is strong enough to cause trouble..! ..just my opinion once again....the law of conservation would have it that if a ghost has ties to a given person who is still living?....then it would attach itself to his or her electric field and hang onto that person or maybe more than one person or maybe even a "place" or a "thing"....I think a lot of things are possible and at the same time, I'm a Christian and believe in God and believe all this follows the physics of heaven and earth being physical things....So, I hope this makes some sense to you and answers your question to some degree.Nathan...Show more

Tyree Allenbrand: (1) Yes, the law of conservation of energy applies to humans.(2) Ghosts do not exist. They are imaginary creatures.

Christopher Calcano: It does apply to us. The thing about humans though is that we are constantly consuming energy through food and releasing it as heat and movement (and using it to power chemical reactions in the body). The amount we use is no more than we can get fr! om food. Now, when we die, we stop taking food in and so run out of energy quickly- the reactions in our bodies last short while then stop, having used the energy up.When saying things like "spirits use our energy to manifest themselves", I'm always sceptical of claims like that. They sound like they're scientific, but they don't explain what this "energy" is (heat? chemical? etc), how it is transferred, or what is using it....Show more

Joel Feagler: Too bad you closed your answer so soon, because there are a couple of crucial points that you seem oblivious to. First and foremost, the kind of "energy" you're talking about as defined! by New Age mysticism cannot be shown to exist, and you are conflating ! this woowoo "energy" with the energy physics knows to pervade the Universe. You can't just take a law of physics and apply it to something that is simply made up, and expect it to be relevant..Second, a fact that is regularly overlooked in this regard, the law of conservation of energy applies to all *closed* systems, with emphasis on *closed*. Earth is not a closed system, and neither are humans. If we were, that would mean that energy could never leave us, which is in direct violation to everything we know. Humans are luminous in infrared, and we excrete waste products, both of which represesnt a constant energy loss. So, this "conservation of energy" you're imagining isn't even true while we are alive, never mind when we are dead. .Your chosen Best Answer is simply fabricated gobbeldygook. It would be trivially easy to detect a magnetic field surrounding humans, such a field simply doesn't exist except insofar that we are all surrounded by Earth's magnetic field, never m! ind all of the child-like magical attributes that answer accords to this non-existent field. .So, "energy" as you refer to doesn't exist, or at least it can't be measured or shown to exist in any objective manner, you're overlooking that conservation laws apply to closed systems and not humans, you're conflating real energy with New Age "energy", and now you're buying into nonexistent fields that surround us even though they can't be proven to exist. This isn't exactly a high point on your education curve......Show more

Stevie Goldey: Yes, energy conservation applies to humans. When a person dies, they radiate some of their energy away in the form of heat (the body cools) and the rest stays right there in the form of chemical energy (fat, muscle, etc). The energy isn't disappearing, it's just not a useable form for the person anymore. Burning the body releases a lot more of the energy, just like burning anything else. There is no evidence for spirits or ghosts. If ! they contained energy or had something to do with magnetic fields, they! would be easily observed by our instruments. They have never been observed....Show more
